S355JR is the European standard (EN 10025-2) structural steel with a minimum yield strength of 355 MPa and 27 J impact energy at +20 °C. Its closest ASTM equivalent is A572 Grade 50; the Chinese equivalent is Q355B. It is the most widely specified high-strength structural grade in Europe for beams, columns, plates and fabricated structures. Nikasteel supplies S355JR in all product forms — MOQ 5 t, EN 10204 3.1 MTC.
S355JR is part of the EN 10025-2 family of non-alloy structural steels. Compared with S235JR (235 MPa), it delivers roughly 50% more yield strength at similar cost per ton — which is why designers use it to reduce section weight in buildings, bridges and machinery.
What the Name Means
- S — structural steel
- 355 — minimum yield strength, MPa (at thickness ≤ 16 mm)
- J — Charpy V-notch impact 27 J minimum
- R — at room temperature +20 °C (J0 = 0 °C, J2 = −20 °C, K2 = −20 °C at 40 J)
Mechanical Properties (EN 10025-2)
| Property | Value | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Min yield ReH | 355 MPa (≤16 mm) | 335 MPa (16–40), 295 MPa (40–63), down to 265 MPa (≤250 mm) |
| Tensile Rm | 470–630 MPa (≤100 mm) | 450–600 MPa above 100 mm |
| Elongation A | ≥ 20–22% by thickness/product | per EN 10025-2 tables |
| Impact KV (JR) | ≥ 27 J at +20 °C | J0: ≥ 27 J at 0 °C; J2: ≥ 27 J at −20 °C |
| Density | 7.85 t/m³ | weight tables apply |
Chemical Composition (ladle, ≤16 mm)
| C | Si | Mn | P | S | CEV |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ≤ 0.24 | ≤ 0.55 | ≤ 1.60 | ≤ 0.035 | ≤ 0.035 | ≤ 0.45 (typ.) |
International Equivalents
| Standard | Grade | Note |
|---|---|---|
| ASTM (US) | A572 Gr50 / A992 | closest match; A992 adds capped yield range for beams |
| GB (China) | Q355B (ex-Q345B) | 27 J at +20 °C, same 355 MPa class |
| JIS (Japan) | SM490A (class match) | 490 MPa tensile class |
| ISO | E355 / S355 | — |
Equivalents are close matches, not identical — chemistry limits and test rules differ. Substitutions must be approved by the project engineer.
Forms We Supply in S355JR
- Sections: H beam/I beam (IPE, HEA/HEB, W series, GB), equal/unequal angles, channels
- Plates: 2–200 mm, cut-to-size, Z-test options
- Hollow sections: square/rectangular tubes
- Forgings: discs, rings, shafts, blocks (see forged shapes)
- Surface: black, primer, galvanized, shot-blasted SA2.5 + epoxy
Weldability
Good by all standard processes. CEV ≤ 0.45 typical — preheat mainly for thick sections or high-constraint joints per the welding plan.
Certification
EN 10204 3.1 MTC with every order, heat-number traceable. 3.2 (third-party countersigned) for consultant-specified projects.
