Steel Plate Weight Calculator

Free plate weight tool — kg per plate by thickness × width × length, kg/m² quick chart, cut-to-size yield estimator and container planning. 2–200 mm carbon & stainless plates.

① Plate Weight

Per plate: -- kg
Total: --
kg = density × thickness (mm) × width (m) × length (m)

② Cut-to-Size Yield Estimator

How many pieces can we cut from one mill sheet? (area-based estimate, no kerf allowance)

Pieces per sheet (same orientation): --
Best of both orientations: --
Final cutting plan accounts for kerf (~3–5 mm), edge trim and grain direction

③ kg/m² Quick Reference

Weight per m²: --
Per ton you get: -- m²
kg/m² = 7.85 × thickness (mm) — works for every flat carbon product

The Formula Behind the Calculator

  • Plate weight: kg = density × thickness (mm) × width (m) × length (m). Carbon steel density is 7.85 t/m³; stainless 304/316 is 7.93 (≈ +1%), 430 is 7.70.
  • Per m²: kg/m² = density × thickness (mm) — the fastest mental math for flat products at any size.
  • kg per foot of 4×8 ft sheet: 2.977 m² × 7.85 × t — e.g. 6 mm = 140 kg, which is why 4×8 plates quote conveniently "per piece".
  • Theoretical vs invoiced: mills invoice on weighbridge weight or agreed theoretical basis (±2–4% band). How quotes exploit the difference is in our steel price structure guide.

Container Planning Cheat-Sheet

  • 20ft container: ≈ 18–22 tons of bundled plates
  • 40ft container: ≈ 24–26 tons
  • Cut-to-size plates stack flat and pack efficiently; mixed thicknesses/sizes in one container, trial orders from 5 tons

FAQ

How do I calculate the weight of a steel plate?

kg = 7.85 × thickness (mm) × width (m) × length (m). Example: 10 mm × 1.5 m × 3 m = 353 kg. Stainless 304/316 runs about 1% heavier.

How many 4×8 ft plates make a ton?

At 3 mm ≈ 14 plates, at 6 mm ≈ 7 plates, at 10 mm ≈ 4 plates per ton (1220×2440 mm sheet).

Does Q235B weigh the same as A36 or S355JR plate?

Yes — weight depends only on dimensions and density, not the grade. Equivalences between GB and foreign grades are in our GB equivalents chart and stainless equivalents.

Is theoretical plate weight the same as invoiced weight?

Usually within ±2–4%. Confirm the weight basis (theoretical vs weighed) on the proforma invoice before comparing quotes.
